About us

Cycle Ipswich is a voluntary organisation that campaigns to improve the cycling experience in Ipswich and the surrounding area.

Constitution

Our group was official constituted on 10th April 2014, see our Constitution. The group has been active for more than a decade prior to constitution and other campaign groups with similar objectives have been active longer still.

Purpose

1. Cycle Ipswich is established to improve the experience of cycling in Ipswich and the greater Ipswich area.
2. We are interested in getting more people cycling, more frequently and more safely
3. We recognise and subscribe to the individual health, social and environmental benefits of choosing cycling as a method of transport
4. We aim to engage with decision makers to debate, advise, consult and direct improvements to policies

During 2009 we achieved the following:

1. Provided a response to the consultation on the £25 million Major Scheme Bid for Suffolk County Council and the Department of Transport. This involved cycling the proposed routes and commenting on the most appropriate facilities.
2. Ran an organised ride for National Bike Week 2009
3. Participated in the 350.org protest ride, organised by Transition Ipswich, to highlight the issues associated with carbon dioxide and climate change
4. Participated in Team 21, a community policing initiative by Suffolk Constabulary, targeting crime hot spots with information packs.
5. Attended a meeting with Rushmere Commoners to get their views on cycle access
6. Held a few social rides to local pubs, using infrequently used routes.
7. Created the East of England’s first school bike train – which takes kids and their parents from Ravenswood to Nacton School.

In 2008, we provided input on the original version of the Ipswich Cycle Route map and in 2009 we provided further updates to improve accuracy. The most recent version is available for free download from the Suffolk County Council website. Paper copies can be collected from Ipswich Tourist Information in St Stephens, Buttermarket.

We communicate through regular meetings, hold public events and chat publically through our Google group.
