School Streets

The streets outside most schools across Ipswich have a lot of parents and guardians driving to the school gates causing congestion, pollution, and road safety problems.

School Streets open the roads around schools to people walking and cycling, allowing the road to be used instead of parents and children needing to squeeze on to the pavements. Motor vehicle movements are banned for around 30-90 minutes around the school arrival and departure times making them much safer for people walking and cycling.

Parents who need to drive can still do so, however have to park a few streets away, thus spreading out the parking problem, and improving road safety, as it also encourages modal shift for people who live closer to the school, thus less people who are driving.

School Streets have been very successful in other parts of the country, with many more getting added as part of the recent emergency measures due to the the Coronavirus and social distancing measures. We now need School Streets to be implemented here in Ipswich and the surrounding area as a matter of urgency.
