If you’re going to the station, why not have a look at the route from station to town centre? On consultation for the “21st Century” spendfest, I suggested visitors on train/bikes might actually want to get to the town centre, and pointed out the Chalon St/Cecilia St/Wolsey St/Silent St route, which needed signing and putting on maps. Nothing duly happened, and strangers might well conclude they shouldn’t have come by bike. A modest request considering the £millions squandered on repainting the bus stations and changing a roundabout back to a cross-roads.

The background to looking at Mallard Way/Hawthorn Drive, is there is the potential for a significant cycling project with minimal impact on motor traffic, which would significantly alleviate the school run problem in the area. We are also looking for a variety of projects outside the town centre, to encourage more cycling in the outskirts of the town so that people are more likely to cycle from their home into the town centre, work, school, or local shops. Additional people cycling in the suburbs will help to get more political will for cycle and walking infrastructure in the town centre.

We would be happy to look at the above route closer in a future ride, as I often use a variation of the route (Grafton Way, New Cardinal Street, Cecilia Street, Wolsey Street, Cutler Street to get to Rose Lane and through to Lower Brook Street when going to/from the station). Also what would you sign it as, since St Nicholas Street/Silent Street are just off the town centre (aka the Market Square).

Signed from the station as “Town Centre” as visitors will most likely arrive via station. The first 500m are not signed, not cycle friendly. The Chalon/Cecilia is not signed or obvious, but virtually traffic-free. Choice of routes from Cutler St. (I tend to be heading for Tower St so via Upper Brook St)

The route chosen may depend on where in the town centre you are going which is what makes it harder to sign post appropriately. Other people may decide they are going to the western end of the town centre.

Town Centre (East) may be an option for sign posting the route you are describing. Please come along if you have time and raise the issue. I’d be happy to have another pre-meeting ride before the next meeting, or some other evening or weekend, which would look closer at the routes between the railway station and town centre.
